The Large Magellanic Cloud, 160,000 light years away. I snapped this image of this distant galaxy from the confines of my home, in the silence of quarantine. Despite being in the middle of a major city, a few interstellar objects, such as nebulas and galaxies, remain faintly visible. Millions of people in a full lockdown have contributed to less light pollution, revealing otherwise hidden galactic wonders in our city night skies. The Large Magellanic Cloud is actually a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way (where Earth is located). It can only be seen in the Southern Hemisphere, and, as you might guess, was named after Ferdinand Magellan, who observed this bright object as he sailed through the Southern Oceans in the 1500’s en route to the Philippines. • For those wondering, I shot this untracked with a 300mm lens, stacked 180 photos at 1.5”, F/4 and ISO 10,000. Shot with the @fujifilmph XT30.
